Cook Question...

I made some blueberry muffins tonight. On the side of the box was a recipe for a "coffee-cake-type" topping for them. The recipe called for a mixture of brown sugar, butter, and chopped nuts (pecans, in my case) to be spooned on top of the batter before putting the muffins in the oven. I carefully spooned the topping on top of the batter, where it promptly sunk into the batter rather than remaining on top. As a result, the muffins had a "candy center" rather than a crispy topping. I followed the recipe for both the muffin batter and the topping perfectly. What went wrong?

Baffled. Maybe a typo in the directions?

I know how to make pudding cakes, and those are kind-of fun because they basically turn themselves upside down when they bake. Maybe something like that happened.

I guess maybe next time I would start cooking the muffins and then add the topping half way through the bake time? I have no idea.

The only other thing I can think of is that somewhere, in fine print, there were other directions to be followed. Something like adding extra flour to the muffin mix?

Or you made a mistake and didn't follow all of the directions that were on the side of the box for the topping. Like, you made the muffin mix following the recipe on the back of the box, and then attempted to follow the side recipe and it was slightly different and you didn't catch the mistake.
