The famous Alaska Pipeline.

The things below, sticking up out of the ground where the pipeline goes under a road, are "heat transfer pipes". They keep the temperature relatively constant and prevent the pipeline from buckling. Keep in mind, normally, the ground is permanently frozen starting just a few inches below the surface. The oil in the pipeline is heated very hot, and even though the pipeline is insulated, where it is buried it has the potential to thaw the ground. That would be a bad thing, apparently since they go to so much trouble to put in these heat transfer pipes.
