
Step 1: Tugboat pushes 15 barges into the lock.

Step 2: The upstream lock doors close. To get an idea of how huge this lock is, click on the picture below and look at the people standing beside the lock gate on the left. The other end of the lock is over a quarter of a mile away!

Step 3: The valves open, letting the water in the lock run out downstream at the other end of the lock, lowering the boat and the barges about 20 feet.

Step 4: Once the water level has dropped (notice the wet marks on the side of the lock walls showing where the water level used to be), the gates at the far end of the locks open...

Step 5: The tugboat pushes the barges out of the lock and they continue downstream. Elapsed time: about 10 minutes.
